Getting to Kaingu Safari Lodge

Kaingu Safari Lodge is situated on the pristine Kafue River some 400km north for the majestic Victoria Falls.

Please note:  landing at Puku from May to end November is in order, but December landings are based on daily assessment of the surface condition.  No landings possible in January, February, March and April

Access by Air

  • Distances & Flying Times:
  • Lusaka to Puku Pan = 265km / 50-70 min
  • Livingstone to Puku Pan = 295km / 55-75 min
  • Airstrip carries an annual DCA certificate of Approval

Access by Road

Road transfers from Lusaka

Road transfers by way of a luxury air-conditioned 8 seater 4x4 can be organised from Lusaka to Kaingu Safari Lodge on request. The pickup can either be from your hotel or from the Airport. Please request details about the road transfer when you make your inquiry and we will be able to quote you a price.

IMPORTANT NOTE:   Although access to Kaingu Lodge is generally good, it does require a vehicle with a higher clearance - preferably a utility type vehicle. The use of sedan cars is NOT recommended as it is a remote location. 

Self-drive directions from Lusaka

Make sure to refuel before you leave Lusaka, as the first possibility to re-fuel is in Mumbwa.

  • From Lumumba Road in the Lusaka CBD, take the Great West Road towards Mongu – this is the “Mumbwa Road” (M9)
  • 151km from Lusaka, you reach the Mumbwa turn-off.  If necessary, go into the town to refuel, otherwise pass it and continue on the M9
  • At the 217km mark (GPS 14-58.28S, 26-27.08E) turn left (south) onto the Itezhi-Tezhi road
  • After ±50km on this road, one reaches the ZAWA Mweengwa wildlife check point (GPS 15-16.53S, 26-14.94E)
  • 3km further on from this point (GPS 15-17.89S, 26-14.17E) turn right (West) at the Kaingu Lodge/ Puku Pans signs
  • Travel 25km along a bush track to the next Kaingu Lodge sign (GPS 15-12.02S, 26-04.25E) and turn left (south).  continue on for ±18km, crossing the Mweengwa Pole Bridge and follow the signs into the Kaingu Safari Lodge Camp

Self-drive directions from Livingstone

  • From Livingstone, take the T1 towards Lusaka
  • At Kalomo town (124km) (GPS 15-17.83S 25.58.69E) turn northwards towards the Ndundumwense entrance gate of the Kafue National Park.  This is ±70km from Kalomo
  • Note!!  Re-fuel at Kalomo as this is the last reliable fuel stop!
  • From Ndundumwense, take the road to Ngoma, the southern HQ of the Kafue National Park.  You will travel through the Nanzhila Plains or along the “Cordon Road” depending on the season and road conditions.  Ask for information on specific directions and conditions at the entrance gate to the Park
  • From Ngoma, proceed to Itezhi-Tezhi, passing the Musungwa and New Kalala Lodges en-route (±22km)
  • From Itezhi-Tezhi, travel north for ±60km to the Kaingu Safari Lodge sign (GPS 15-17.89S, 26-14.17E) and turn left (west) onto the bush track.  Proceed to the next Kaingu Safari Lodge sign ±25km further on

(GPS 15-12.02S, 26-04.25E) and turn left (south).  Continue for ±18km, crossing the Mweengwa Pole Bridge and follow the signs into the Kaingu Safari Lodge camp.

Alternative route from Ithezhi-Tezhi

  • An alternative route from Itezhi-Tezhi for 4x4’s only in the dry season (April to November) is through the villages and bush leading directly to the Kaingu Lodge camp
  • From Ithezhi-Tezhi travel ±10km to Kanzwa; a village comprising of a couple of shops on the roadside
  • ±3km  past Kanzwa, turn left (west) at the Bushinga School/ Kaingu Safari Lodge signs

(GPS 15-36.01S, 26-05.17E). Follow the most well used track and the Kaingu Safari Lodge signs for ±45km to Kaingu Safari Lodge, asking for directions en-route. Have fun!!
